Abstract

Statistical methodology is a fundamental element to produce verifiable, valid, and reliable knowledge; this is why statisticians often work collaboratively. Statistical consulting provides a scenario to apply the statistical methodology in other disciplines. Therefore, it is necessary to have capable individuals for this function, who possess skills and abilities that go beyond knowledge of statistical principles and methods; communication and interpersonal skills play a critical role in the success of consultancy. This work supports an innovative intervention, which is described in its implementation with the health restrictions of COVID-19, during the period of February-August 2021. Through the analysis of a diagnostic test and semi-structured interviews, the impact of this intervention, designed under the Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach, is assessed. The students significantly valued their participation in a real consultancy, highlighted the importance of this experience for their professional growth as statisticians. They also considered that the intervention scheme was efficient in increasing motivation and involvement.
