Abstract

The development of media competence is essential in academic training and is particularly important in the university education system. Many researchers agree on the need for specific training of teachers and students in the field of media education. The research that was carried out by applying a survey online, which was developed and initially validated by the Alfamed network and adapted for the Mexican environment. The study subjects came from two groups of students from the Autonomous University of Chihuahua in different settings; a group of recent entry into the basic subject of Technology and Information Management and the other of students in Social Service near the end of their bachelors. The data were subjected to statistical treatment and yielded results on the proficiency levels of five of the six dimensions of media competence. Differences were found for each group in the dimension of technologies, regarding their passage through the university, but a medium level of competences for both groups in the dimensions of ideology and values and in interaction processes, not associated with their academic formation was also found.
