Towards a school principal training model based in competencies

Abstract

The following work corresponds to the preliminary report of a doctorate thesis, trying to identify the competencies, characterize, validate and intervene in the directive action with the purpose of structuring a management model similar to the focus by competencies one. In order to generate the theoretical framework of the thesis, and how parting from the central exploratory process, the definition of competency can be explained. Likewise narrating the experience to find the skills and traits that define a good school principal, and the means its own validations were developed. The research is of qualitative nature, an exploratory study was made in the literature regarding the theme, 50 surveys were applied to school principals from 16 states of Mexico, as well a focus group of 10 experts from Mexico and Venezuela. The first finding indicates that exist 18 directive competencies which a school principal must have to develop their job successfully. These qualities are distributed in different percentages, personally, professionally and instrumentally. We highlight the significance of training to develop skills as a school principal, due mainly too, in the case of Mexico, there is no degree that creates school principals, but its developed during the service as a teacher and its only predecessor is teaching.
