Abstract

The algebraic knowledge of a new entry student into an engineering field can be a crucial point in the development of their degree. Consecutively are shown the results of a research to locate the influence of said knowledge in students joining the Institute of Technology of Jimenez, this knowledge should have been previously learned during high school, due to its importance in their academic advance in mathematical subjects such as differential and integral calculus. A written exam was distributed amongst different groups of students before and after an algebra workshop, with the purpose of observing and analyzing the basics associated with algebra the students acquired prior to joining the institution, and to measure the knowledge acquired after finishing the workshop offered by the Institute after 2 weeks before starting their classes. Therefore, learning the effect and proposing support strategies that could be integrated before and within the mathematics related subjects to benefit the students that participate in the teaching-learning process. The final stage demonstrates an increase in right answers.
