Abstract

Private universities appear for the first time in Mexico during the decade of 1930. During the first six decades their growth was stable, however, between 1990 and 2000 the demand grew and so did enrollment rate. The explosive growth of said sector seems to have come to a halt in the past decade, it is currently unknown if this stagnancy is also characteristic of the state of Sonora. Noting that, between 2010 and 2016, several new universities opened their doors offering several different educational opportunities. This paper has the purpose of describing the private superior education system in Sonora, analyzing its development and cycles. Three questions are the pillar of this paper: Which has been the behavior of superior private education in Sonora since its conception to this day? What type of institutions make up the area? What are the institutional characteristics that these establishments posses?
