Emotions at school: between reason and emotion

Abstract

The present investigation approaches the subject of the emotional intelligence in the public schools of the city of Temuco - Chile; the objectives to be developed refer to evaluating the emotional competencies and emotional intelligence of boys and girls of 5th grade and to know the gender differences between men and women. The design of the research is a mixed approach with an emphasis on quantitative design; the first extensive phase, consists of the application of scale TMMS 24 of Mayer and Salovey to students of 5th year of the city public schools; later in the second phase, qualitative phase of multiple case study design, three schools of the previous phase were selected to study in their academic context the emotions of said students. The data collection techniques were discussion groups for students and interviews with the teachers. The results of the study indicate that the participants present adequate levels of emotional intelligence and that the girls perceive and regulate their emotions better than boys.
