Abstract

The role of the school principal has a differential leading role in the pursuit of continuous improvement in education because they are responsible for promoting actions for the change and transformation of the school. A managerial practice of this nature requires certain contextual conditions. This paper presents the result of a qualitative study that investigates the performance conditions of school principals of rural communities in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico and analyzes the effects that said conditions have on the practice of the managerial function. The multiplicity of activities that make up those functions were classified into two large groups: on one hand leadership practices and on the other, management practices, organization and school administration. The former showed better conditions, however, the latter occupies the greater time of the school day due to the lack of contextual conditions so that the leadership practices are only partially or never carried out.
